Apprenticeship-Program

A 2-12 Month Cross-Cultural Experience

Imagine stepping into a new culture—navigating new places, learning a new language, and discovering how to share Christ among the nations. It can feel overwhelming—but you don’t have to do it alone. Our apprenticeship program is your guide for the journey—a next step in finding your place in God’s global mission.

Over the course of two months to a year, we are inviting you to not simply pour yourself out in hands-on ministry, but to be poured into—growing in self-awareness and giftings, deepening your life in Christ, and discovering how you can join God in His mission.

This is a call to ministry from the overflow of your life with God, where transformation leads to mission. Our program is intentionally designed to help you navigate the challenges of cross-cultural life while cultivating the Gospel deeply into your heart—and out to the lost.

However, we want you to be able to do this in the context of community. So we have pre-vetted field leaders that are ready to take this journey with you. Following in the footsteps of Christ, we are inviting you into deeper apprenticeship with Jesus and under the mentorship of seasoned missionaries and global leaders.

Apprentice Pathways

1. Summer Experience (8–12 weeks):

Summer Experience invites college students and young adults into a season of deeper life with Jesus while serving cross-culturally. Participants join experienced missionaries and local leaders in hands-on ministry, team life, and spiritual rhythms that grow your faith and ministry skills. With strong training, support, and debriefing, this experience equips participants to share the gospel and be formed for lifelong mission.

2. Semester (3–6 months):

Semester is for those ready to go deeper after a previous cross-cultural experience. You will engage in ministry, team life, and spiritual rhythms while exploring your gifts and calling to the nations. Through training, support, and debriefing alongside your local church, participants are shaped as followers of Jesus alongside the Global Church.

3. Year (6–12 months):

The Year program offers a deeper dive into missions through a yearlong apprenticeship. Participants join a team, learn language and culture, and serve alongside missionaries and Global Church leaders while discerning long-term calling. With mentoring and support, this season provides space to grow in Christ, engage the lost, and discover God’s vision for your future ministry.

Upstream is committed to equipping your local church with resources for post-trip debriefing and also offers additional layers of care:

  • On the Field: Team leaders provide reflection and feedback before departure- offering local perspective from someone who walked with you in that season.

  • With Upstream Sending (Upon Return):

    • Summer Apprentices – 36-hour group debrief to celebrate, reflect, share insights, and discern next steps.

    • Semester/Year Apprentices – Online or in-person debrief with peers that is tailored to individual timing that ensures valuable reflection and integration.

We provide comprehensive administrative support to ensure each participant is well-prepared, well supported , and spiritually aligned before entering the field. Go serve with your church’s global partners! Some opportunities to serve overseas come through partnerships your sending church already has. In these cases, Upstream works alongside your church to help you prepare, provide care, and ensure you’re sent well. Each location will be carefully vetted and agreed upon together, to ensure we can send you well to the specific location. This allows you to serve where your church already has relationships while receiving the support, training, and guidance you need for a healthy and fruitful experience.

Cost

Our operations team works closely with our field team leaders to create a budget that is consistent with the location and length of time you’ll be there.

In addition to the budget that is established with the field, there is a one time fee to cover the cost of orientation and a monthly fee to cover administrative costs.

FAQ

How do I finance this trip?

Participants are required to raise support through a personalized fundraising process. Upstream will assist by providing a donor platform for managing and processing funds. Participants will also receive resourcing and training on how to build a support team.

What requirements are there to participate in the Apprentice Program?

The Apprentice Program is designed for individuals between the ages of 18-35. Applicants are not required to have a certain level of education to join the apprenticeship.

Can I choose which location I go to?

Yes, during the application process, you'll work with Upstream alongside your sending church to determine which field location is the best fit based on your gifting, experience, calling, and the ministry locations availability and needs in that season.

Can I apply for the program if I have no previous cross-cultural experience?

While the program requires some previous overseas experience, certain opportunities (like Summer Experience) may be open to individuals with limited experience, as long as they are committed to learning and growing. Contact your sending church leader to discuss eligibility if you are unsure.

What happens if I face challenges during my time abroad?

Upstream provides consistent support and check-ins to address any challenges that may arise. Participants are encouraged to be open about struggles and to lean on their team, mentors, and Upstream staff for guidance. This ensures they receive the help they need for personal and spiritual growth, as well as the success of their ministry.

What if I’m married or have children?

We welcome applications from married couples! As with individuals, we review the suitability of the Apprenticeship for couples on a case-by-case basis. That said, we generally do not recommend this program for those who have children.

How do I know which Pathway is the best fit for me?

If you’re unsure, this is a great question to explore with your sending pastor as well as with an Upstream staff member. However, the best pathway really depends on your background, availability, and what you sense God is leading you into right now.

  • Summer Experience (8–12 weeks) is often the best first step if you’ve only spent a limited amount of time overseas before or want to get a taste of cross-cultural ministry in a focused season. It’s short-term but still very intentional in formation.

  • Semester (3–6 months) is a natural next step if you’ve already had some cross-cultural experience and are ready to dive deeper. It allows you to spend more time immersed in the culture and explore your gifts in ministry.

  • Year (6–12 months) is designed for those who are sensing a possible long-term call and want to intentionally test that out. It gives you time to learn language, experience team life, and discern your place in God’s mission.
